Wedding speeches are bitter sweet! They are sweet because they signify the joining of two people in marriage, but they are bitter because they are a pain in the rear to write!
Have you ever been picked to give a wedding speech? This has got to be one of the most nerve racking things someone must ever do! Luckily for you, I have been down this road before and am willing to share my experience with you. Here are a few tips for you to think about when writing your first wedding speech.
1. Find a nice quiet and calm place to write. The least distraction the better, after all you are going to be thinking quite a bit. Memories will flood your mind as you think of all the crazy and stupid things you and your best friend did that you wish you could bring up at the wedding.
2. Be prepared to revise your speech several times. Do not and I repeat do not accept your first draft as final. Big mistake.
3. Jot down some of the memories you have shared with both the groom and the bride.
4. Consider your audience: moms and dads, friends, grandparents, children etc. Depending on who is in attendance, you may need to tailor your speech accordingly.
5. When thinking about your audience, also consider what they might connect with. For example, if you are giving a speech to a group of policeman because the groom is one, you might want to include some of the jargon they use etc.
6. Once you have a complete speech laid out, walk a way from it. Come back to it a week later and read it a few times. Now is the time to fine tune the speech. Don't be afraid to make changes, drop things or add things.
Well, I hope these quick tips will help you get started on writing great wedding speeches.
